Cholesterol Pleurisy associated with Paragonimiasis

Abstract
Cholesterol pleurisy with effusion is characterized by a high concentration of lipid and cholesterol crystals in the pleural fluid and is a distinctly rare disease.
The author recently encountered 4 cases of typical cholesterol pleurisy with pulmonary paragonimiasis and it is reported .
The ages ranged from 23 to 43 years, and three were males and one was female.
The clinical course was from one to three years. In three of the four cases, complication of pleurisy was noted in one week to one year after the onset of the pulmonary distomiasis.
In all cases, typical ova of paragonimus was discovered in sputum but repeated examination of the pleural effusion for the eggs was negative.
The cholesterol level of the pleural fliud ranged from 305mg to 895 mg/dl whereas the serum level was from 211 mg to 296 mg%.
Three of the.4 cases were treated with Bithionol and complete recovery was obtained
